The most important things in life sometimes, are often overlooked. We don’t really feel they are important until they stop working or malfunction. When it comes to cars, a very important feature that is often overlooked is the windshield wipers.

You may not know how important these windshield wipers are until you face certain challenging situations. For instance, imagine you are driving on a very rainy day and your windshield wipers stop working? you won’t be able to drive well because you won’t have a clear view of the road.

Many of us today may not know that when these car wipers were invented it was not electric. The driver had to reach out the window and clean it with the hands. Just imagine driving with one hand and using the other hand to clean the windscreen? it is dangerous right? That’s true especially when you are driving on the high way.No doubt it was a big relief to many drivers when the first set of electrical windshield wipers were introduced.
These wipers are made from rubber material and like every part of any vehicle, they should be maintained and checked regularly as they tend to wear out quite quickly.

Take note of these two things listed below as they could shorten the lifespan of your windshield wipers.

-One thing that could damage your windshield wipers is to use them to clean off dirt or debris off your windshield without first using the windshield washer fluid. Using your wiper blades on dry glass causes a horrible noise and could damage them. Anytime you need to clean off any stain on your windshield, apply water or windshield washer fluid first so that the blades can move smoothly.
-In certain parts of the world where snow falls, many people just turn on their car engine and start using their wipers to scrape the hard snow off the windshield. This will definitely cause them to become deformed with time. Instead of using the wipers directly on the hard snow, use a snow scrapping object first and use water to wash d snow off properly before using the wiper to finish off the cleaning.

No matter how well you take care of your wipers, it will no doubt wear out one day as far as you use them regularly.Friction will cause it to wear out. When you notice that your wipers leave streaks on your windshield, you should start to think of buying a new set.

How to know when to change your wiper blades?

When you notice that wiper blades no longer make proper contact with the windshield surface or they are causing a reduction in your visibility, these are pointing signs that they are due for replacement. In addition, the below terms and reasons will help you discern properly when they should be replaced
-The industry standard is to change your wiper blades every six months to a year or as soon as you notice a change in driving visibility.
      – You should change your wipers when they streak.Streaking takes place when the rubber squeegee dries to the point of cracking. This could be caused by debris, road tar, dust or any substance carried in the wind and collected on either the glass or the blade.
-A third reason is when they skip. The part of a wiper that comes in contact with the glass should touch the glass firmly leaving no gaps but when it Skips, the blade develops a curvature and will leave a gap. This happens when a car is out of use and parked for too long
-A fourth reason is when they wear. Wearing occurs with time due to extensive use. Note that this is an element of friction as a good science student should know that 2 objects that comes in contact with each other regularly will wear out and must be replaced.
-A fifth reason is when they split. Splitting occurs when the rubber squeegee separates from the frame. This could be caused by extreme harshness of the sun as the sun’s UV rays could damage wipers too. This is very possible as the ozone layer shielding the sun is deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Maintenance tips for your wiper blades
-Pull your wiper blades away from the windshield and Clean your wipers and windshield with a damp towel to remove any debris before you hit the road.
-As mentioned earlier, if you live in a cold region where snow falls,do not use your windshield wipers to remove snow. Instead, you should use an ice scraper or use your defroster to melt the snow.
-During winter periods, It is best to park your car in an indoor garage but if your car is parked outdoors, pull your wiper blades away from the windshield to prevent the build up of ice on the rubber squeegee. This simple act will prevent them from sticking to the windshield.
I hope you put these tips to good use. Remember that good visibility is essential while driving so,it is important that you take care of your car wipers as they form a vital part of several important features you shouldn’t overlook in your car.
